Ok, so I just started reading the follow up to What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera, Here’s to Us, and it got me thinking again about this book. (So based off my last post, I am posting about it instead of just thinking about it).
I really like this book for many reasons, it is a cute story, yes, but it is not off the wall. In other words you could say this is dumb there is no way that two people are going to meet like this in NYC, but the book states that it is an unlikely story and it is the universe pulling these two characters together.
Speaking of which, I have always been a believer that things happen for a reason, being in the right place at the right time, etc… This was a bonus for the book for me. Sometimes when I think about if one thing may have been different in my past how I would be in a completely different place, but I love where I am now so I would not want to change that as where I am is what was meant to be.
The switching back and forth between the character first person I thought was going to be odd, but it worked, and helps to understand the feelings of each character and really makes you root for both of them. It reminds me of being young and when I like someone. Of course very different, it is amazing how much things have changed, I could never have imagined being out in high school when I was growing up. It would have been nice, but going back to the above, I would not change anything if it would change where I am today.
The fact that Ben and Arthur do not end up together at the end helps make this more realistic, I mean two high school students ending up together forever at the get go when one does not even live in the same state is a bit much. That being said it is sad at the end that they do not end up together.
Now that I am starting Here’s to Us, I find myself rooting for them again. I have a feeling this will be a series of books where they are off again on again, which could be interesting if they do it correctly. Anyway that is it for now.
Wow, this really is just a bunch of ramblings.
